Thursday, June 02 2016 by SNTV
  • Dominic Thiem said "he couldn't imagine" ever reaching the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam as he reflected on his win over Marcel Granollers in the fourth round of the French Open on Wednesday (1st June). Tomas Berdych and David Goffin previewed their quarter-final matches with Novak Djokovic and Thiem respectively.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Dominic Thiem defeated Marcel Granollers 6-2, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4

    (Q. Your first time into a quarter-final at a Grand Slam. Congratulations. Can you just talk about what you feel about that accomplishment?):

"It's a real great thing. Like two years ago I was here with Ernests (Gulbis) and he played semi-finals, and back then I couldn't really imagine that I'd go this far myself one day, and it's already here like two years later and it feels really good."

    SOUNDBITE: (English) David Goffin, defeated Ernest's Gulbis 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3

    (Q. It's your first quarter-final here, too. Can you tell me a little bit what you think about tomorrow's match already against Dominic Thiem? You are fellow mates. You did preparations together and things like that. You're fighting for the top 10 tomorrow, not only for the semi-final.):

"Yeah, tomorrow is going to be a tough match against Dominic. Of course he's playing great on clay. He's a great player on clay court. Yeah, but it's first quarter-final for both. Yeah, it's gonna be a tough one.
But, yeah, he's a friend. I know him really well. I beat him already also, but he beat me also on clay. So it's going to be an interesting match. I hope it's going to be a great match for both and hopefully I can win."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Tomas Berdych, defeated David Ferrer 6-3, 7-5, 6-3

    (Q. Looking ahead, perhaps the heavier conditions are a bit better to play Novak in?):

"I think he can also deal with these conditions quite well, so let's see if it's going to play a role to be advantage or disadvantage, which I don't know right now. Really I have nothing to lose. I'm playing well and I'm just going to try to stick with that. I'm going to try to, again, use my tennis as much as I can on the court and really just try to be the one who is dictating the ball. Then let's see what's going to happen and how it's going to go."
