Intro:
New Zealand's Steven Alker won the Cleveland Open on Sunday to match the longest playoff in PGA history.
Script:
After Steven Alker bogeyed the final two holes at the Web.com Tour's Cleveland Open on Sunday, Dawie van der Walt birdied his last two holes - holing a 20-footer at the 18th - to pull even at 14-under for a total of 270 to force a playoff.
Alker and van der Walt struggled on the extra holes, missing chance after chance after chance to win. They each parred for first 10 holes in the playoff before Alker finally broke through with a three-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th.
42-year-old Alker set up his winning shot with a perfect 7-iron from 172 yards out on the fairway.
The 11-hole playoff broke the Web.com Tour record of nine set in 1998 by Eric Booker at the Lehigh Valley Open, and matched in 2009 by Gary Christian in the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic.
It also matched the record for the longest playoff in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event, set in the 1949 Motor City Open when Cary Middlecoff and Lloyd Mangrum were declared co-winners because of darkness.
