Rory McIlroy has split up with his fiancee Caroline Wozniacki just a few days after sending invitations out for their wedding.

He was visibly upset when questioned over the break-up at a news conference to preview the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

"Obviously, it's quite a difficult time for Caroline (Wozniacki) and myself. I think the statement really said it all. This morning it was mutual and amicable and we both thought it was for the best for both of us. It's time to move on and I think that I have said all that I need to say and I just want to get my head into golf this week and concentrate on the tournament and try and do well. I have been playing well. My form has been good. I just want to dive straight into it and keep myself somewhat busy and have a good week on the course."

"I am not going to lie - it is going to be very difficult. But at least when I get inside the ropes I can just try and concentrate on the shot at hand. But it's obviously going to be difficult."

Q. Rory, we just wonder, were you tempted to pull out at any stage because of this because it can't be easy with so much turmoil going on even if you have perhaps become used to it in the last 18 months?

"No. I didn't think there was any reason to do that. There's no good time to end a relationship, I guess. I made a commitment to be here. It is the European Tour's flagship event. I am very proud to be part of the European Tour. The European Tour have been very good to me over the last couple of years and I thought it was my duty to come back and play in this event. And once I gave my word that I would I wasn't going to go back on that."
