Wawrinka & Berdych advance to Miami 3rd Round

  • Intro:

There were wins for third seed Stanislas Wawrinka and Tomas Berdych, seeded seven, in the second round at the Sony Open in Miami, USA on Saturday (22nd March).

    Script:

Perhaps the locals in Miami saw Stanislas Wawrinka's match up against the World No 99, Daniel Gimeno-Traver as a foregone conclusion, either way it was a sparse crowd for the Australian Open Champion's match up.

And unsurprisingly with Third seed Wawrinka in irresistible form as he stormed through the opening set without losing a game and dropping just three points on his serve. His elegant single-handed backhand in full flight as ever.

Yet the second saw a complete turnaround, the Swiss star then served three double faults and committed 23 unforced errors as he lost his serve twice in the second set, allowing Gimeno-Traver to get back on level terms.

Wawrinka regrouped in the decider and an early break of serve helped him eventually seal a 6-0 3-6 6-3 victory which sets up a meeting with France's Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

Seventh seed Tomas Berdych had to come from a break down in the first set to beat France's Stephane Robert 7-6 (7/5) 6-1, while 22nd seed Alexandr Dolgopolov beat Finland's Jarkko Nieminen 6-4 6-2 to advance to Round 3.
