The New York half-marathon began on Sunday with Britain's Mo Farah preparing to make his full marathon debut in London in April.

The double Olympic champion was aiming to break his own British half-marathon record of one hour 59 seconds set last year.

Farah was in the leading pack of eight athletes when he was sent crashing to the tarmac after appearing to be accidentally tripped from behind at the halfway point of the race.

Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai seized the opportunity and broke away from the group to stretch his lead.

Farah recovered from his tumble to overtake Stephen Sambu in second with 800 metres to go.

Mutai was already celebrating before he won the race in a time of 60 minutes and 50 seconds.

Farah held off the challenge of the 25-year-old Sambu to claim second and clock 61 minutes 8 seconds, just outside his British record. But the 30-year-old collapsed shortly after he finished and was taken away in a wheelchair.
