Li Na of China beat Dominika Cibulkova in three sets to progress to the semi-finals at Indian Wells on Thursday.
In a repeat of the Australian Open final between the pair back in January, Li won the first set 6-3 to take control of the match.
The Slovakian fought back to win the second 6-4, but Na won the decider 6-3 and will now play Italian Flavia Pennetta in the last four, after Panetta knocked out Sloane Stephens.
There was 12 year age gap between Panetta and Stephens and it was experience that shone through in this quarter-final clash.
The 32-year old Panetta won the first set 6-4, before Stephens levelled things up at one-set all, in a match affected by swirling winds.
And in the third set Pennetta won six of the final seven games to ensure victory, eventually winning 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
