World number two Novak Djokovic overcame a mid-match scare against Alejandro Gonzalez in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells in America on Tuesday.

The Colombian responded to a comprehensive defeat in the first set by taking the second set 6-3.

But Djokovic emerged victorious in the third set to win 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

Spain's Fernando Verdasco went one better by knocking out the tournament's eighth seed Richard Gasquet, 7-6, 6-1.

There was another upset when world number 26, Marin Cilic, sent Tommy Robredo, who is ranked nine place higher, crashing out of Indian Wells 6-4, 6-3.

Ernests Gulbis completed another scalp by beating the in-form Mexican Open champion Grigor Dimitrov, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5.

Indian Wells is held in the Southern California desert and the event proved just as bleak for the stunned trio of Gasquet, Robredo and Dimitrov.
