    Defending champion Maria Sharapova suffered a shock third round defeat at Indian Wells on Monday, losing at the hands of Italian qualifier Camila Giorgi.

    Sharapova made 58 errors in the match and Giorgi, ranked 79th in the world, took full advantage on route to a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win.

    It was the 22-year-old's first win over a top-five player in her career, delighting her fans in the crowd.

    Elsewhere there were no such problems for top seed Li Na. The Chinese player, who has never been past the semifinals in six previous appearances at Indian Wells beat Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-4.

    Whilst Italian Flavia Pennetta, the 20th seed, was a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 winner over former US Open champion Sam Stosur of Australia.

    Meanwhile eighth seeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 2-6, 6-0. The former Wimbledon champion will now play 12th seed Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia in the next round.
