Britain's Richard Kilty won gold in the men's 60m final and Nia Ali beat Sally Pearson in the women's 60m hurdles on a day of surprises in Sopot.

Britain's Richard Kilty stunned sprinters in 60m final at the World indoor athletics championships by winning gold in Poland. He clocked a personal best to win in 6.49 seconds. All the more surprising as he was only in the Team GB squad because James Dasaolu is injured.

There was also a shock in the women's 60 metre hurdles final. Olympic champion Sally Pearson was beat by the USA's Nia Ali.

There was some joy for the home crowd in Sopot as Poland's Kamila Licwinko shared gold in the women's high-jump with Russia's Maria Kuchina.

The day of surprises did not stretch to the shot put event where Valerie Adams of New Zealand won her third world indoor gold medal.

The Czech Republic's Pavel Maslak added to his European indoor title by winning the men's 400 metres.

American Francena McCorory crossed first in the the women's 400.

Brazil's Mauro Vinicius da Silva won his second world indoor title in the long-jump.

In the women's triple-jump Russia's Ekaterina Koneva jumped 14.46 metres to win gold.

Ayanleh Souleiman of Djibouti won the men's 1500 metre gold.

The women's version was won by Sweden's Abeba Aregawi.

In the men's heptathlon USA's Ashton Eaton came close to a world record in winning gold, something he was perhaps a tad frustrated by.

And there was gold for Konstadínos Flippidis of Greece in the pole-vault, there was no doubt he was happy.
