Broersen and Whiting pick up golds at the World Indoor Championships

    There was gold for the Netherlands' Nadine Broersen as she won the pentathlon, with USA's Ryan Whiting winning shotput gold at the World Indoor Championship in Sopot, Poland, on Friday.

    Sally Pearson of Australia was the biggest star on show during the first day of the World Indoor Championship in Sopot, Poland.

    Clocking in at 7.79 seconds, Pearson comfortably won her heat in the 60 metres hurdle.
    There were some medals up for grabs on day one.

    Nadine Broersen of the Netherlands won the pentathlon with some excellent high jumping.

    She beat Brianne Theisen Eaton of Canada to second place as Alina Fodorova of Ukraine took third place.Broersen won with 4,830 points.

    Eaton set a new national record, scoring 4,768, with Fodorova finishing on a total of 4,724.

    Polish hopes of a gold medal on day one were dashed when Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski couldn't recreate his London form.

    Majewski ended up finishing fourth, with USA's Ryan Whiting finishing top with a throw of 22.05 metres on his fourth attempt.

    Whiting also won the indoor world championship title in 2012.

    David Storl of Germany came second with New Zealand's Tomas Walsh finishing third.
