  • Intro:

Oscar Pistorius has left court after day one of his murder trial in South Africa.

The Paralympian athlete had to negotiate a media scrum before he could get into a waiting car in Pretoria.

    Script:

The end of the opening day of the murder trial of Oscar Pistorius.

Such is the media interest in the Olympian, that proceedings are being broadcast live on television in South Africa and across the world.

And at the end of day one, Nathi Mncube, spokesman for the prosecution expressed his satisfaction with the limited progress so far:

"Look it's going the way - everything that we set out to achieve for today at least has happened, because remember the most important thing is to get the trial under way, you know we don't want to have one day wasted. There was a bit of a delay in the morning but all in all it has gone according to plan. He has pleaded, Mr Pistorius has pleaded, there were admissions that were made and thirdly we did manage to call our first witness, as much as we have not been able to finalise the evidence today. But, of course, tomorrow we are going to start much earlier - you know from tomorrow we start earlier and hopefully things will go very smoothly."

If convicted, Pistorius, who won six Paralympic Games gold medals, could be sent to prison for at least 25 years before the chance of parole.

A lone judge, hearing the biggest trial of her career, will ultimately deliver a verdict and decide on any sentence.

"Part of the trial and part of cross examination is to try and expose inconsistencies and disturbances in the witnesses statement as much as they do it to our witnesses today of course we hope to get the chance to cross examine Mr Oscar Pistorius, so this is nothing that we are worried about."
