Witness statements begin in Oscar Pistorius murder trial

    The first witness called in the trial of Oscar Pistorius describes what she heard the night Reeva Steenkamp died.

    Script:

    The murder trial of Oscar Pistorius continues in Pretoria and the first witness has been called by the prosecution. His neighbour Michelle Burger, who had an agreement not to be filmed described what she heard on the night Reeva Steenkamp died.

    NATSOT (English) Interpreter for witness Michelle Burger:

    "My Lady it was an evening like any other evening, we were at home, we ate dinner, I prepared food and we went to bed at our normal hours which is between nine and ten. My lady just after three I woke up from a woman's terrible screams. Just after her screams my lady I heard four shots, it was four gunshots that I heard, the time between the first and the fourth shot was much longer than between the second and the third one."

    NATSOT (English) Prosecutor Gerrie Nel:
    "there were four shots. You said the first... Could you perhaps give us a demonstration by using 'bam'?"
