Dolgopolov stuns Ferrer to make Rio Open final

  • Intro:

Unseeded Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov knocked out the tournament's second seed David Ferrer (6-4, 6-4) in the ATP Rio Open semi-final on Saturday. The 25-year-old takes on another Spaniard in the form of world number one Rafael Nadal in Sunday's final.

    Script:

David Ferrer was bouncing before the Rio Open semi-final against Alexandr Dolgopolov but the unseeded Ukrainian took the spring out of the Spaniard's step with this dazzling drop shot.

The tournament's second seed's hopes of winning the first set faded as fast at Dolgopolov's drop shot from behind the base line. The 25-year-old is a motor racing fan and he sped away to claim the first set 6-4.

Ferrer offered some resistance in the second set with this forehand winner.

Dolgopolov was fortuitous when his backhand stroke hit the top of the net but there wasn't anything lucky about this fantastic forehand winner.

The 5ft 11in player rattled off this ace to win the match 6-4, 6-4 and book his place in the final on Sunday against Rafael Nadal. Off court, Dolgopolov creates computer games for a living but you couldn't make this storyline up.
