Having closed to within four seconds of the overall lead after winning stage four on Thursday, Nairo Quintana claimed first place in the Tour de San Luis at the end of Friday's fifth stage - a 19.2-kilometre individual time trial in San Luis.
The Colombian - the runner-up in last year's Tour de France - finished the stage in 16th place, but crucially was 30 seconds faster than Gaimon and took a 26-second lead over the American.
The stage win went to Quintana's Italian team-mate Adriano Mallori, who recorded a leading time of 22 minutes and 11 seconds.
Taylor Phinney had been the pre-stage favourite, but the American had to settle for second place, 2.7 seconds behind Mallori.
Phinney later admitted that the wrong choice of front chainring cost him a little speed, vital seconds and the stage win.
Jorge Giacinti finished in third place 29 seconds off the pace, with Larry Warbasse of the USA a further 20 seconds behind in fourth.
The Tour de San Luis continues on Saturday with a 184.4-kilometre sixth and penultimate stage from Las Chacras to Merlo.
