The second stage of the Tour de San Luis saw Julian Arredondo of Trek Factory Racing finish just ahead of BMC's Peter Stetina.

It was the Colombian's first win with Trek since making the jump to the WorldTour this year following two seasons in Japan.

Earlier on, five riders including Jorge Giacinti, Jonathan Guzman and Sebastian Tolosa attempted to escape from the peloton but they were kept in check and were swept up in the final climb.

Arredondo and Stetina broke away from the peloton with about 5 kilometres of the stage remaining and managed to hold off the chasing group. That was led by Movistar's Nairo Quintana.

Quintana beat Darwin Atapuma of BMC for third and wound up finishing three seconds behind the top two. And the sprint to the line finished at the top the Mirador del Potrero.

In the general classification, stage one winner Phillip Gaimon of Garmin Sharp climbed with the leaders on the final ascent to finish 15th in the stage, 19 seconds behind Arredondo.

That means the American maintained a firm grip on the overall lead with his closest rival Marc De Maar down 1:47.
