A charity match arranged by the Swiss tennis star saw Roger Federer face France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Wednesday ahead of next week's Australian Open.

The exhibition took place at the Rod Laver Arena at Melbourne Park, where the Australian great was also in attendance.

Following a break in game three, Federer was soon 3-1 up in the first set.

However, Tsonga pulled level and eventually a tie-break was needed to separate the two players, where it went the way of the French world number ten.

Federer fought back in the second set and broke for a 4-2 lead.

The event's host held the momentum and closed out the set with the loss of just three games.

The third set fluctuated, with Tsonga building a 4-2 lead before Federer battled back to go 6-5 up.

And the 17-time grand slam champion clinched a 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-5 victory after a long and entertaining match point.

Federer will be seeking a fifth Australian Open title this year, while Tsonga will be looking to go one better than his second place in 2008.
