Top seed and defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska suffered an embarrassing defeat in the second round of the 2014 Apia International Sydney tennis tournament on Tuesday.

Radwanska had looked to be the easy favourite against American qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands - but that wasn't the case.

After falling 3-0 behind, Mattek-Sands settled into the contest and came back at Radwanska with her superior power to claim the first set 7-5.

Mattek-Sands came out even stronger in the second set and took an early 3-0 lead.

Radwanska could do nothing to claw her way back into the match as the 28-year-old American won in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.

It was Mattek-Sands' fifth win after coming through the qualifying draw.

She will now face fellow American Madison Keys in the quarter-finals. Keys defeated wildcard Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia 6-0, 3-6, 7-6(3).

Elsewhere former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, the second seed, had little trouble in the afternoon session, beating American qualifier Christina McHale 6-1, 6-0.
