Poland on brink of Hopman Cup Final

  • Intro:

Agnieszka Radwanska revived Poland's hopes of making the final of the Hopman Cup with a courageous three-set win over Samantha Stosur in Perth on Thursday.

Earlier, Bernard Tomic brushed aside Grzegorz Panfil to give Australia the early lead in their concluding Group A tie.

    Script:

Standing in the way of Poland and a place in the Final of the Hopman Cup was Bernard Tomic and Australia.

Tomic lost his opening two singles matches here in Perth, but the Australian looked in good touch here breaking Grzegorz Panfil early on.

This could have been a meaningless rubber - but for the drubbing Canada handed Italy in the preceding Group A tie.

That 3-matches-to-love scoreline meant that Poland needed to win two rubbers to be sure of advancing - otherwise the equation gets complicated, involving totting up the number of sets won.

Swept aside 6-1 in the first, the Pole, ranked 288 in the World woke up in the second taking this point on his serve with a volley.

Tomic though, was always in charge, the 21-year-old taking the deciding second set 6-4.

Australia are out of the tournament, whatever happens. But they were still threatening to derail Poland's charge to the final.

And Samantha Stosur seemed intent to continue the Aussie fighting spirit.

Against a seemingly off-form Agnieszka Radwanska, Stosur secured the first set 6-3.

The powerful Australian appeared well on course for a rapid victory, especially when Radwanska was forced to take a medical time-out early in the second for attention to her shoulder.

But the world number five returned to the fray - and was soon quashing any suggestion of a shoulder injury.

It appeared a brave effort from Radwanska - even the home crowd were applauding her efforts.

She went on to level the tie, taking the second set 6-4.

The momentum was now with the Pole, and ignoring the injury she went on to take the decider, 6-3.

A stunning win for Radwanska - a win for Poland in the doubles match and they're certain of a place in the final. Lose, and the calculator decides Canada and Poland's fate.
