  • Intro:

Australian teenager Ashleigh Barty beat Daniela Hantuchova on Monday to reach the second round of the WTA Brisbane International.

Third seed Maria Sharapova eased into the second round of the WTA Brisbane International with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Caroline Garcia of France on Monday.

    Script:

Daniela Hantuchova reached the Brisbane International final in 2012 - and the Slovakian would surely have been confident heading into her opening round match.

The World Number 33 was up against 17-year-old, local girl, Ashleigh Barty.

Barty, World Number 190, did not seem to be fazed by the occasion, taking an early break in the first set. This shot here at 30-0 on her serve confirmed the Aussie was relishing the challenge.

And at 6-5 on the Hantuchova serve in the second set, she forced the Slovakian into an error to progress into the second round.

    A massive upset by the 17-year-old, 6-3, 7-5 triumph.

Barty would face the winner of the day's later tie between Maria Sharapova and Caroline Garcia of France.

Sharapova had only played once since pulling out of Wimbledon with a shoulder injury.

But the Russian appeared to be back to her best as she wrapped up the opening set 6-3 with this crushing forehand.

The world number four dominated the second set even more emphatically and secured a 6-3, 6-0 triumph - Garcia could do little about the Russian's power and was blown away.

Therefore, Sharapova will now face the 17-year old Ashleigh Barty in the second round.
