Novak Djokovic faced Radek Stepanek in the opening rubber of the Davis Cup final on Friday.
Djokovic of Serbia was the hot favourite having won the ATP World Tour Finals in London on Monday and is unbeaten since September.
But in a tight first set, Stepanek, of the Czech Republic, contained his opponent well as they traded early breaks of serves.
Djokovic, however, weathered the storm and snatched a second break with a blistering crosscourt forehand as Stepanek was serving to keep the set alive.
He pushed on from there and seemed to be in superb form as he cruised through the second set for the loss of just a single game, to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
Stepanek put up more of a fight as the third set unfolded, but the Serbian was never under any real pressure and duly closed
