A bit of Afghan sporting history was made on Tuesday as the first professional fight took place.

With millions of people watching on television across the country, home favourite Hamid Rahimi stepped out in the ring against Tanzania's Said Mbelwa.

And the crowd was kept happy as Rahimi won by technical knockout in the seventh round.

Rahimi said his aim in organising the "Afghanistan Fight 4 Peace" was to bring the people of his country together through sport, after decades of warfare.

Afghan locals were happy about the move forward.

    SOUNDBITE: (Dari) Ahmad Rashid, Spectator:
"We are really happy because it is the first time Afghanistan has hosted a match at an international level."

During their five years of rule in Afghanistan the Taliban outlawed boxing as un-Islamic.

It seems Afghanistan has finally reclaimed it.
