Andy Murray headlined the night session on day eight of the US Open as he made it through to the quarter-finals with a straight sets win over Canada's Milos Raonic.

The Olympic gold medallist didn't face a break point as he set up a last eight encounter against Marian Cilic with 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory.

In the women's doubles the Williams sisters bowed out as they were defeated by the Russian pairing of Nadia Petrova and Maria Kirilenko 6-1, 6-4.

Serena Williams's day had started well after she destroyed fourth round opponent Czech Andrea Hlavackova 6-0, 6-0 to reach the quarter-finals in the women's singles.

Next up for Williams will be Ana Ivanovic after the 12th seed reached the quarter-finals of a grand slam for the first time since she won the 2008 French Open with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova.

The women's singles has seen its fair share of upsets this year and that trend continued as second seed Agnieszka Radwanska was dumped out in emphatic fashion by Italy's Roberta Vinci in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.

There was more success for Italy as Sara Errani reached the quarter-finals of a grand slam for the third time this year with a hard fought win over sixth seed Angelique Kerber 7-6, 6-3.

In the men's singles Tomas Berdych set up a quarter-final encounter with world number one Roger Federer with a straight forward win against Spain's Nicolas Almargo 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-1.
