Top seed Victoria Azarenka was pushed to the very limit by seventh seed Samantha Stosur before progressing to her first semi-final at the US Open, courtesy of Tuesday's (September 4) 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) victory.

World number one Victoria Azarenka and defending champion Samantha Stosur played the match of the tournament so far in the quarter-finals of the US Open on Tuesday.

The Belarusian took the rain delayed opener 6-1, but Stosur fought back to win the second set 6-4.

The decider was a fabulous tussle that went all the way to a tie-break.

However the Australian showed signs of nervousness and gifted Azarenka the match with a wild backhand.

Relief after two hours and twenty minutes on court - the top seed through to her first ever US Open semi-final.
