    Venus Williams was beaten by Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, in the second round of the US Open on Thursday.

    American James Blake overcame 24th seed Marcel Granollers of Spain in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.

    Mardy Fish erased a two-set deficit on Thursday to reach the third round of the US Open.

    The 23rd-seed turned things around to beat Nikolay Davydenko 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-1, 6-2.

    Meanwhile at Flushing Meadows, Serena Williams beat Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-2, 6-4 in her second round match.

    Next up for her is Russia's Ekaterina Makarova.

    Sloane Stephens came through 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 against Germany's Tatjana Malek.

    And there was further success for the USA when James Blake made it through to the third round, beating Marcel Granollers 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.

    Also in action was men's number one seed Roger Federer.

    No problems in his straight sets dispatching of Bjorn Phau, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.

    He'll play Fernando Verdasco in the third round.

    And Venus Williams is out of the US Open.

    After she lost to sixth seed Angelique Kerber 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.
