Jo-Wilfried Tsonga suffered a major shock as he was knocked out in the second round of the US Open by Martin Klizan.

The Slovakian is ranked number 52 in the world but he overcame the number five seed 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.

It was the first time that Tsonga has failed to make the third round of a Grand Slam since he lost to Andy Roddick in the first round of the 2007 Australian Open.

Former world number one Ana Ivanovic suffered no such shock against Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson.

Ivanovic hit 39 winners to Arvidsson's seven.

In the first game in the Louis Armstrong Stadium, Maria Kirilenko brushed aside Greta Arn of Hungary 6-3 6-2.

The Russian will face Andrea Hlavackova in the third round.
