World number one Victoria Azarenka continued her smooth progress through the US Open draw with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over qualifier Kirsten Flipkens on day three.

The Belarusian is looking for her second Grand Slam title of the year after winning the Australian Open in January, and up next faces Chinese 28th seed Zheng Jie for a place in the fourth round.

No problems either for fifth seed Petra Kvitova. The Czech left-hander dispatched Alize Cornet 6-4, 6-3.

In the men's draw fourth seed David Ferrer overcame Kevin Anderson of South Africa in straight sets.

The Spaniard faced just three break points as he won 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (3).

Home favourite John Isner faced a tougher test against Belgium's Xavier Malisse, but eventually came through 6-3, 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (9).
