  • Intro:

China's Li Na won her first title of the season by defeating Germany's Angelique Kerber 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 on Sunday in the final of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

    Script:

China's Li Na and Germany's Angelique Kerber came into Sunday's Western & Southern Open final with contrasting seasons to date - Kerber has already won two career titles while Li has failed to win a title despite playing in three finals.

The ninth seed had not won a title since her triumph in 2011 at the French Open and things were not looking good when her German opponent came out firing on all cylinders in the first set.

Li made 17 unforced errors while losing the set 6-1 in only 29 minutes.

Kerber then managed to break Li in the opening game of the second set and it appeared that the Chinese players poor form in finals was set to continue.

However... Li battled on and broke back to make it three apiece before winning three consecutive games to level the match at one set each.

Li came into the match winning four of their five previous encounters and out of nowhere looked on track to make it five from six matches when she broke Kerber's serve in the opening game of the third set.

From there Li completely dominated proceedings by winning five of the next six games to win the match 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.
