Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu beat Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 on Friday to reach the semi-final of the Gstaad Open in Switzerland.

Following wins for Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov earlier in the day, Paul-Henri Mathieu and Ernests Gulbis met in the third quarter-final at the Swiss Open.

Gulbis gained the upper hand in Gstaad after an immediate break. 

The Latvian took the opening set by six games to four.

The Frenchman fought back and surged into a five-love lead before closing out the second set, 6-1.

He then broke at the start of the third set, and with Mathieu 2-1 up and due to serve - rain suspended play.

The contest resumed almost an hour and a quarter later and, eventually, Mathieu closed out a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory in his first quarter-final of the season.
