Tennis history's been made at the Atlanta Open.

Eighth seed Go Soeda dismissing third-seed and fellow countryman Kei Nishikori 6-2, 6-1 in the first ever ATP World Tour quarter-final between two Japanese players.

Meeting for the first time, Soeda capitalised on all four of his break point opportunities and saved all seven against his serve to advance to the next round in 73 minutes.

Soeda is through to his second tour-level semi-final of the season, after beginning the year with a run to the Chennai Open last four.

He is ranked number 54 in the ATP Rankings this week, equalling his career high mark he set back in June.

Soeda will next play Luxembourg's Gilles Muller for a place in Sunday's final.
