    Script:

Home favourite Philipp Kohlschreiber faced Italy's Fabio Fognini for a place in the quarter-finals of the ATP German Championships on Thursday.

After his recent run to the quarter-finals om the grass of Wimbledon, Kohlschreiber is making an impressive return to the clay.

The sixth seed, currently enjoying a career-high ranking of 21, took the first set by seven games to five.

And a break in the fifth game of the second signalled victory for Kohlschreiber.

Fognini failed to win another game as the German served out to win 7-5, 6-2.

Top seed Nicolas Almagro went into his match against Russian Nikolay Davydenko with a record of two titles and four finals on the clay this season.

And the world number ten continued his fine form by going a set up.

The Spaniard completed an impressive display with his second ace of the match to seal a 6-4, 6-3 victory over the 2009 champion.

Almagro will play Kohlschreiber in the last eight.
