Defending champion Gilles Simon was knocked out of the German Tennis Championship on Wednesday (18th July) when he was beaten by Germany's Tommy Haas 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

    Script:

Many locals wouldn't have expected veteran Tommy Haas to knock Gilles Simon out of the German tennis Championships in Hamburg on Wednesday.

But the 34-year-old took the match to a third set.

And he went further...sealing a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over the Frenchman to make it through to the quarter-finals of the clay-court event for the first time in 13 years.

Haas is looking to become the first German player to win the tournament since Michael Stich in 1993.

Florian Mayer gave the home support even more to cheer about as he defeated Robin Haase in straight sets to set up a last eight clash with his compatriot Haas.

Number four seed Marin Cilic remains on course for a second title in two weeks after he eased past Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis 6-3, 6-2.

Up next for Cilic is Albert Ramos who defeated Lukas Rosol in three sets.
