The 2012 Croatia Open continued in Umag, Croatia on Wednesday - with the second round.

In a hotly anticipated clash home favourite Marin Cilic took on Daniel Brands of Germany.

The second-seeded Croat was in control throughout, hitting six aces and dropping serve only once. Brands wasted two break points for a 2-0 lead in the second set, and Cilic then won five games in a row.

Cilic the victor with a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 scoreline to earn a place in the quarter finals.

Elsewhere Marcel Granollers of Spain took on in-form Italian Potito Starace.

However the Italian proved little in the way of resistance as the up and coming 26 year-old Spaniard managed to wrestle the early advantage and take the first set, 6-4.

Despite a fightback at the midway point that saw Starace level the match after taking the second set, 6-3 Granollers once again dominated in the third - taking a well earned 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win to move into the quarter finals.

Elsewhere Matthias Bachinger of Germany downed seven seed Martin Klizan of Slovakia 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
