Shock defeat for Saori Yoshida

Monday, May 28 2012 by SNTV

  • Intro:

Japan won their first women's World Cup in six years by beating Russia 5-2 in front of their home fans in Tokyo on Sunday.

    Script:

After winning the previous five World Cup titles, China had to be content with bronze in the latest edition in Tokyo on Sunday.

In the match for third place, the Chinese beat Canada by a comfortable margin - Zhao Shasha one of those to record victory against Jessica MacDonald Bondy.

The gold was a match up between hosts Japan and Russia - with a shock in store.

Saori Yoshida had been unbeaten in 58 matches before her contest with Valeria Zholobova - but that run in the 55kg category came to an end.

19-year old Zholobova won 2-1 to put a serious dent in Yoshida's preparations for London 2012.

But Japan still prevailed over Russia to claim top spot on the podium in Tokyo - 48kg wrestler Hitomi Obara won by fall in her match with Lubov Salnikova, with fellow Olympic team member Kaori Icho also recording a win.
