Peter Lawrie: 'it is playing tough'

Sunday, May 27 2012 by SNTV

  • Intro:

Luke Donald moved to the brink of a second successive BMW PGA Championship title and reclaiming the top ranking from Rory McIlroy by mastering tough conditions at Wentworth on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead into the final round.

By shooting a patient 3-under 69, Donald was one of only three players to break 70 on a day of high scoring that led course designer Ernie Els to fiercely criticise officials for the state of the greens at the European Tour's flagship event.

    SOUNDBITE (English): Justin Rose:
"Yeah, it was difficult. Clearly the wind blew and you know, four or five days without rain, the course is getting really pretty fiery now. The fairways are playing are pretty fast. You are having to really think about the clubs you are playing off the tee and it has been very tough to get the ball close to the flag. So, putting as well ... the greens, obviously by the time there has a full field gone through there, you don't want too many three- four-footers out there. Late in the day, there is a bit of traffic on the green. So there weren't many easy shots out there today."

    SOUNDBITE (English): Peter Lawrie:
"I was very happy after nine holes, a little bit sad after 18. Played lovely on the front nine, pretty good on the back nine. One or two sort of little mistakes. Just didn't hole any putts on the back nine and it is playing tough."

    SOUNDBITE (English): Ernie Els:
"I played very well today. I mean, I could have squeezed some more out of there. I mean I really missed a lot of putts. But it was a very difficult day. I mean, scoring conditions ... this is as tough as it gets. I mean, it is very firm, it is very fast. The wind is gusting 20 to 30 miles per hour. So it is as tough as you are ever going to see anything played. So it was satisfying to get a 70 in the bag."
