There was a number of shock results on the opening day of the LPGA Sybase Match Play Championship, with defending champion Suzann Pettersen bowing out alongside three other well-known American's.
England's Jodi Ewart seen here playing a wonderful approach to the 13th, is ranked 202nd in the world rankings, and she defeated the reigning champion 3 and 1, despite Petterson taking the first two holes. Meanwhile Paula Creamer, Brittany Lincicome and Michelle Wie also lost to lower ranked players.
Creamer, the No. 8 seed never lead in her match against the number 57 seed Jennifer Johnson, and eventually lost 2 and 1 after missing this putt.
And then Number 9 seed Lincicome was eliminated in the first round for the second successive year, this time by fellow American Ryann O'Toole, seen here holing from off the green on the 16th.
Michelle Wie also contributed to a surprising day of results when she was knocked out by Mina Harigae, who played this beautiful shot on the 8th hole to set up a birdie.
Yani Tseng, Na Yeon Choi and Cristie Kerr were some of the bigger names who did progress, but the day ended with No. 4 ranked Ai Miyazato of Japan being surprised 2-up by Mariajo Uribe of Colombia who won the last 5 holes to cause an upset.
The best comeback of the day belonged to Natalie Gulbis, who came from 4 holes down with 8 to play to stun Mika Miyazato, and birdied 18 in the process. But the story of the day belonged to the number of star attractions falling at the first hurdle particularly Petterson losing to the relatively unknown Ewart.
