Lee Westwood was the star attraction as the Indonesian Open got underway at the Royale Jakarta Club on Thursday.

The reigning champion got his defence off to a great start with a hat-trick of birdies.

Westwood continued to thrill the crowds as he finished the front nine on six under.

The 38-year-old attempted to end the day in style as his approach shot on the last set up an eagle putt.

That proved too much. but Westwood was pretty modest as he moved to top the leaderboard following a seven under round of 65.

SOUNDBITE (English) Lee Westwood, World number three

" To be honest, without blowing my own trumpet, I play pretty well...everywhere. Its not that I play poorly everywhere else, is it? But I have also enjoyed coming to Asia and playing here. You know I enjoyed playing on grainy greens. You know in Asia there is a premium for hitting fairways, you go into some of those rough, it's real flying rough, they tend to get the greens firm as well. So there is a real premium on accuracy and if you enjoy playing somewhere, then you play well".

Arnond Vongvanij is is two shots back on 63 whilst India's Jyoti Randhawa is one of six players tied for third on four under thanks to a brilliant long putt for eagle on the 12th.
