Darvish: "My mind and my body was not on the same page"

Tuesday, April 10 2012 by SNTV

  • Intro:

Texas pitcher Yu Darvish overcame a rocky start to pitch five and two-thirds innings of what would be a 11-5 Rangers' victory over the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.

Darvish allowed four runs and four hits with three walks in the top of the first inning but stayed in the game and only allowed one more run the rest of the night. Texas led 8-5 when Darvish was relieved, ensuring he would win on his major league debut.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: Yu Darvish, Texas Rangers Pitcher (Japanese), rough translation:

"Today, when I stepped on the mound for the first time I was very calm, you know, I felt very calm and mentally I was very calm but my body felt like it wanted to go and go and go so I think at the beginning of the game my mind and my body was not on the same page."

SOUNDBITE: Yu Darvish, Texas Rangers Pitcher (Japanese), rough translation:

"I knew the strength and the level of the (MLB) game over here - I mean I felt that from the spring training but still, being able to be out there and to be my normal self, I think that's something that will come with time because all I know so far is pitching in Japan. So I think as I continue to throw more over here, at this Major League level, I think I will get a feel for what normal is."
