Man City on the brink of Europa League exit

Thursday, March 15 2012 by SNTV

  • Intro:

Manchester City need to overturn a one nil away defeat to go through to the quarter finals of the Europa League, when they take on Sporting Lisbon in the second leg of their last 16 tie at Eastlands on Thursday.

    Script:

Manchester City will have to overcome a one goal deficit when they welcome Sporting Lisbon to the Etihad Stadium for the second leg of their Europa League last 16 tie on Thursday.

Roberto Mancini's side are unbeaten in 16 European matches at home, but they will be without injured midfielder Gareth Barry.

However, Yaya Toure is available after suspension and Mancini hopes the Ivory Coast international's comeback will help the side bounce back from losing top spot in the Premier League last weekend.

SOUNDBITE (English): Roberto Mancini, Manchester City manager

"We need to play only to win. we can't think, no we don't want to win this game because it could be a distraction for the Premier League. I the history all the top squads won the championship, and went to the final in the Europa and the Champions League. Our mentality should be this."

There is talk of another return.

Mancini may include Carlos Tevez in next Wednesday's Premier League match against Chelsea - a move Nigel de Jong would welcome.

SOUNDBITE (English): Nigel de Jong, Manchester City

"Everybody can make a difference, and he (Carlos Tevez) as well. Everybody knows his qualities. Nobody ever doubted his qualities. It was just the face of him having some difficulties with the club. But in the group and as a player, he never changed, and I think the qualities that he has is always an asset for every team, and also for us at this stage."

City have not conceded in their last four matches at Eastlands - they will have to continue that form if they are to reach the quarter-finals.
