Real Madrid on red alert for CSKA

Wednesday, March 14 2012 by SNTV

  • Intro:

Seeking a second successive Champions League quarter-final berth, Real Madrid must not relapse into its recent history of slipping up at the last-16 stage come Wednesday's return leg against CSKA Moscow.

Madrid have won 17 matches out of 19 at the Bernabeu Stadium this season - with both defeats coming against Barcelona - and hold the away-goal advantage following a 1-1 draw.

    Script:

Until a semi-final appearance last season, Real Madrid had failed to emerge from the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League in every year since 2005.

And this time CSKA Moscow stand in their way.

Three weeks ago Leonid Slutsky's side scored a stoppage-time equaliser to deny Madrid a win in the Russian capital.

And Real coach Jose Mourinho's expecting a tough match at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid coach:

    (About CSKA)

"They are culturally very strong from many years ago, even before they were Russia, when they were the Soviet Union. They are very strong counter-attacking, they are very strong at defending, they are strong physically, they are very fast and they know how to defend. I have a huge challenge in my hands because I've played against CSKA both with Chelsea and with Inter and I am fully aware of the difficulties. That's why I try to give my players the following message: we have to be very serious and give it everything tomorrow."

In a prolific season, Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the first leg.

The Portuguese winger has found the net in his last six games, bagging a total of eight goals.

On Tuesday, Ronaldo stated that he's no intention of leaving Real anytime soon.

SOUNDBITE (English) Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid:

"I always go season by season and I'm here in Madrid to compete with the best players so I'm always improving myself. I'm very, very happy to be here, to be with these players, to be with this coach, because for me it's amazing - I always learn something, and I want to carry on like that year by year".

Madrid remain without unfit forward Angel di Maria, but French striker Karim Benzema returned from the injury he picked up in the first leg to play some minutes in Saturday's 3-2 win over Real Betis.
