'Chelsea need luck' - Di Matteo

Wednesday, March 14 2012 by SNTV

  • Intro:

Italy's Napoli face Chelsea of England in London on Wednesday determined to end English participation in the Champions League for this season.

If they succeed in their aim it will be the first time no English side has reached the quarter-finals of the competition since 1996.

Chelsea caretaker boss Roberto Di Matteo thinks his side can stage a comeback, but admits they need a bit of luck.

    Script:

Chelsea face an uphill task if they are to progress to the last eight of the Champions League.

A 3-1 defeat in Napoli has left them needing at least a couple of goals at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Caretaker manager Roberto Di Matteo wants a decent display, as well as a bit of fortune.

""We need a great performance tomorrow night, but a little bit of luck as well because in a cup competition you need to deserve the little bit of luck that makes you go through. Personally, it would be a proud moment but, more than anything, we just want to do well for the club and our supporters. We want the team to show a very passionate performance and try and turn this tie around."

Meanwhile captain John Terry says the stage is set for Chelsea to ressurect their season.

"Because it could really go down as one of the best nights in Chelsea's history. You know, obviously we'd need to go on and continue that. But these nights at the Bridge (Stamford Bridge), I can assure you, are great atmospheres, intimidating for other teams to come, wet surfaces, lively start from the players as well... with all those things sort of mixed in... and we experienced it when we went there as well, the atmosphere was intimidating, very hostile. They were in our faces as well which wasn't nice, even though we managed to go one up there they showed a real determination to come back. So whatever the case tomorrow, you know, we're going to continue right to the end and keep plugging away."

Spearheaded by a three-pronged strike force, which ripped Chelsea's creaking defence apart in the last leg, Napoli are in pole position.

But one of those prongs, Edinson Cavani isn't counting his chickens.

"Well, honestly I don't think Chelsea will be too different (from the first leg). We know exactly what to expect. We know what they can do. It's going to be a tough match and a very difficult night for us. We saw recently in the game between Arsenal and AC Milan that a team full of champions can change a match in a few minutes."

Following the sacking of Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas at the start of the month, Chelsea have secured wins in the FA Cup and Premier League in the space of four days without conceding a goal.

Napoli manager Walter Mazzarri is wary of the new blood.

"Something has changed, not much tactically but obviously the fact that they have won two games out of two since Di Matteo took charge is a big morale boost for their team and that worries me but I am confident that my team, if they play the way that I am used to seeing them play, well we have nothing to fear. But, of course, it's going to be a very fascinating game tomorrow."

Chelsea need at least two goals on Wednesday, otherwise Napoli are through at a stroll.
