Inter prepare for Marseille Champions League tie

Tuesday, March 13 2012 by SNTV

  • Intro:

Inter Milan manager Claudio Ranieri was moved to tears when he saw his squad end a nine-match run of matches without a win on Friday and he's hoping the emotion carries over for another inspirational victory against Marseille, who come to the San Siro with a 1-0 lead from the first leg, in the Champions League on Tuesday (13th March).

Inter beat Chievo Verona 2-0 Friday with late goals from Walter Samuel and Diego Milito for their first win since defeating Lazio 2-1 on January 22nd and Ranieri now says overcoming their French opponents and reaching the last eight of the Champions league could mark a turning point in their season.

    His tactics are simple enough.

"We'll try to score and avoid conceding one. We know how dangerous Marseille are and how quickly they can counter-attack."

Inter, the 2010 winners of this competition under Jose Mourinho, are aiming for a third successive quarter-final appearance, while Marseille is looking to reach the last eight for the first time since lifting the trophy in 1993.

Midfielder Dejan Stankovic is wary of his French opponents.

"It will not be an easy match , because we know Marseille very well. We know they have got more points away than at home in the group stage, so we will have to keep a warm heart and a cool head to face this match as you could face a war. We have to be patient and control the match because then you can score at any time."

Inter's star players, including the oft-injured Wesley Sneijder, have failed to hit the highs this season. But Stankovic thinks their experience could shine through yet.

"We know very well the value of the tomorrow's match, because we have played many like this during our careers so we know that tomorrow we have the opportunity to change our season that so far has not been that great to a positive one."

Since beating Inter 1-0 in the first leg, Marseille have suffered their own slump in form - losing their last four league games without scoring and slipping to eighth place in the standings.
