Montpellier kept up the pressure on Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain with a 3-0 victory over Caen on Sunday night.
With PSG having won earlier in the day Montpellier knew three points were a must in the title race and nearly got the breakthrough their play deserved through Remy Cabella, only for his effort to hit the woodwork.
With the game goalless at the break Montpellier up the ante and made the breakthrough six minutes into the second half, the home side keeping the ball alive after Marco Estrada had hit the crossbar before Karim Ait Fana eventually scored following Henri Nsame's cross.
Rene Girad's men had to be patient before the second arrived seven minutes from time, Caen's Aurelien Montaroup presenting Souleymane Camara with an opportunity too good to pass up.
Montpellier put the exclamation point on the win in the last minute when Livio Nabab took out Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to give the title hopefuls a penalty.
Olivier Giroud stepped up to convert the spot kick and keep Montpellier on PSG's trail in the title race.
