PSV Eindhoven thrashed 6-2 at home by 10-man Twente Enschede

    PSV Eindhoven missed the chance to return to the top of the Dutch Eredivisie when they were thrashed 6-2 by FC Twente at the Philips Stadion on Sunday (4 March).

    Twente were 4-0 ahead by half-time, but lost defender Douglas who was sent off in the 51st minute.

    Despite being down to ten men and conceding two goals, Twente still found the net twice more to move above PSV in the table into second place on goal difference and now trail leaders AZ Alkmaar by one point with a game in hand.

    PSV Eindhoven were looking to return to the top of the Dutch Eredivisie when they entertained FC Twente at on Sunday.

    With Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk watching from the stands, third-placed Twente took the lead after eight minutes when teenager Ola John was allowed plenty of space to drill a shot along the ground and into the back of the net.

    Eleven minutes later PSV were stunned again as Luuk de Jong set up Willem Janssen to fire the ball past goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson and Twente had doubled their lead.

    Former England manager Steve McClaren, now in his second spell as Twente coach, watched his charges go 3-0 ahead when Peter Wisgerhof, like John, was allowed too much time and space as he let fly from 22 metres.

    The club from Enschede were far from finished as they went into a 4-0 lead five minutes before half-time as de Jong silenced the home supporters with a flying header from John's cross.

    It was the ninth game in a row de Jong had scored and took his tally for the season to 20.

    But six minutes into the second half Twente were reduced to ten men when Douglas was shown a straight red card for a kick out at PSV captain Ola Toivonen.

    Four minutes later PSV took advantage of the extra man when Dries Mertens floated a free kick into the Twente box and the Sweden international Toivonen rose above everyone to head in and make it 4-1.

    The home side were now in control of the game and pushing forward for another goal, but Twente counter-attacked in the 74th minute through Leroy Fer, who held of his markers to make it five for the visitors.

    Eight minutes from the end, PSV pulled back another goal when Toivonen headed home from an unmarked position ,

    With the game out of PSV's reach, they were caught out at the back once more when de Jong found Janssen storming through and the 25-year-old midfielder scored his second of the game to complete the rout.

    It ended 6-2 to Twente, an McLaren's side go ahead of PSV on goal difference into second just a point behind AZ Alkmaar - with a game in hand.
