Wei-Yin Chen living the Major League dream

Friday, March 02 2012 by SNTV

  • Intro:

After six seasons with Chunichi Dragons of Nippon Pro Baseball, Taiwan's Wei-Yin Chen will pitch in Major League Baseball for the Baltimore Orioles in the upcoming campaign.

The 26 year-old left-hander is at the Orioles spring training camp in Sarasota, Florida working out with the team and making the transition to life in the United States.

    Script:

Spring training for The Baltimore Orioles and a dream come true for Wei-Yin Chen.

The O's haven't had a winning season in 14, and will be looking to improve on 2011.

Chen, who has signed a three-year deal worth a reported 12 million US dollars, had a 36-30 record with the Chunichi Dragons.

He's now looking forward to life in the US with his new team

SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) Wei-Yin Chen "I feel happy. I'm very comfortable here and looking forward to pitching here. This has always been my dream, since when I was little in Taiwan."

The first Taiwanese player to suit up for Baltimore has the confidence of Manager Buck Showalter who said there is still a learning curve ahead.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Buck Showalter "This is just about getting his work done and being ready to start. He knows where the finish line is and he knows he's going to be on the club. So I'm not going to sit there and critique every little day. I watch him. But I said before there's three different levels, all the stuff you do on the side, all the batting practice - you know there's side work then there's batting practice then there's batting practice with people swinging the bat, then there's games over there. And then there's another level in Baltimore. So, so far, so good. He's been impressive."

Having already made a positive impression on his team-mates and coaches, Chen seems to be adjusting well to the American lifestyle as well as the game

SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) Wei-Yin Chen "I feel grateful to be here. The food here, I love it. I hear stuff from the players in Taiwan like their spring training camps are boring and in the middle of nowhere, but I feel really happy to be here. I can find a lot of food here - like Asian food, American food, I can eat a lot here. I feel happy to be here."

Chen's scheduled to feature in an intra-squad game as early as this weekend, the start of his American dream.
