Angela Stanford wins Women's Champions Tournament in play-off

Monday, February 27 2012 by SNTV

  • Intro:

American Angela Stanford won on the third play-off hole to claim her fifth LPGA career title at the HSBC Women's Champions in Singapore on Sunday.

While Stanford celebrated, it was tragic for South Korean teenager Jenny Shin who blew her one-shot lead on the 72nd hole with a double-bogey.

Shin and her compatriot Na Yeon Choi and Shanshan Feng of China were involved in the play-off after all finished on 10-under-par after 72 holes.

    Script:

American golfer Angela Stanford has won the HSBC Women's Champions at the Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore after a nail-biting playoff on SUnday.

After a rain delay 19-year-old Jenny Shin, the overnight co-leader, lay on 12-under - a one-shot Stanford going into the final hole.

The teenager, however cracked under the pressure pulled her tee shot wide and into the trees.

Once the ball was found it became clear that the South Korean would have to drop incurring a one-stroke penalty.

In the end she double-bogied and dropped to 10-under par.

Stanford then had a par putt to win the tournament, but she too failed to take her chance.

That brought smiles to the face of Na Yeon Choi of South Korea and Shanshan Feng of China in the clubhouse - who had finished their rounds about two hours earlier on 10-under - as the drama unfolding before them meant that they were back in with a shout as they joined Shin and Stanford for a four-way playoff.

Those smiles would soon disappear when Feng missed a par putt on the first playoff hole and Choi missed hers at the second.

At the third extra hole, Shin had a six-foot par-putt - but she too missed and had to settle for a bogey.

So, Stanford stood staring at a four-foot putt, her fourth chance to win the title, and heaved a massive sigh of relief as the ball rounded the lip before dropping in the hole.

And afterwards she offrered her sympathy to the distraught Shin

That was Stanford's fifth career title and a first American winner at the Women's Champions at the Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore. Stanford took home US$ 210,000 for her effort during the week.
