Guardiola: "The pitch was unacceptable"

Thursday, July 28 2016 by SNTV
  • Ahead of Manchester City's International Champions Cup match against Borussia Dortmund on Thursday (28th July), Pep Guardiola tournament organisers for the "unacceptable" pitch which forced the cancellation of their scheduled clash with Manchester United in Beijing

SOUNDBITE: (English) Pep Guardiola, Manchester City manager (on the cancellation of the match against United in Beijing):

"The pitch was unacceptable...we don't travel to here in China just for holidays or a training session. We came here for a little bit of training but especially to play two friendly games. So I think it was the first time to cancel a game here. Maybe it is a good lesson for people who organise this kind of events. They are looking for good hotels, they are inviting good players, but at the end, like many times happen in UEFA, the pitch it doesn't matter. For them the pitch it doesn't matter but the pitch is the most important thing, for the fans, for to avoid injuries, to play as best as possible. Of course, all the coaches play like they want, but the pitch, who takes care of the pitch? It was maybe a concert 10 or 15 days ago and nobody take care. So one groundkeeper was there for 10 days, 15 days to take care. I think it was not about the water, not about the last rains. It was about the people here, it doesn't matter what is the stadium and what is the pitch, and what is the situation for the players."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Pep Guardiola, Manchester City manager (on banning players from first-team training for being overweight):

"No. They were not overweight, but I want my players fit and for me the weight is so, so important. We need to run, we need to fight, we need to jump, we need to need the ball. And after three days again, then three days again, then three days again. When you are not fit and your weight is not proper, danger is coming. They are not fast enough, quick in the head enough and that's why I want my players to be absolutely fit."
