Five-try Ulster stun Toulouse

Saturday, December 12 2015 by SNTV
  • Ulster recorded a stunning 38-0 victory over four-time European champions Toulouse in Belfast on Friday (December 11).

Everyone expected Ulster to come out fighting on Friday in their Champions Cup match against European powerhouse Toulouse.

Both sides had lost their opening Pool 1 matches, but history favoured the home side - after a convincing 30-3 win last time they met in Belfast.

Tries from Nick Williams and Andrew Trimble set them on their way, and saw the hosts take a comfortable 17 - 0 lead at the interval.

And Ulster's dominance continued in the second half - Luke Marshall effectively settling the outcome of the match in the 45th minute.

But there was much more - and a bonus point - to come.

Stu McCloskey made it 29-0 less than ten minutes later.

And Franco van der Merwe crossed for the fifth and final try in the 71st, wrapping up the bonus-point win.

With Paddy Jackson kicking four conversions and a penalty - and replacement Ian Humphreys kicking the fifth conversion, Ulster romped to a 38-nil success - condemning Toulouse to a first-ever pointless night in European competition.

But there's little time to celebrate the win - the Irish province will meet the four-time European champions in the return fixture next Sunday in France.
