  • Fans reacted on Tuesday (9th August) to New Zealand's shock 14-12 defeat at the hands of Japan in the two sides' opening game of the men's Olympic rugby sevens.

There was an early upset in the men's Olympic rugby sevens, as New Zealand - one of the favourites for the gold medal - were beaten 14-12 by Japan.

And fans outside the stadium, reacted to the result:

SOUNDBITE (English): Chris Ferguson, New Zealand fan:

"It's been a tough start to the Olympics for the New Zealand team. We didn't do that well in the start and lost to Japan for the first time, I think in the history of our game. So it's scary, it's scary at the moment. I'm emotionally scared."

Elsewhere in the tournament Australia were beaten by an impressive French side, whilst Argentina narrowly beat the USA. And American fans were on hand to assess the development of the sport in their country:

SOUNDBITE (English): Jeff Brook, USA fan:

"This Olympics is awesome for Rugby in America. This develops programs, puts it on the main stage, this is exactly what America needs to develop - a Rugby program. It just puts so much emphasis on the game, and we see it developing from the junior levels to the high, we love it."

Team GB opened their campaign with a comfortable 31-7 victory over Kenya. The top two sides in each of the three pools go into the quarter-finals, plus the two best third-placed teams.
