England job a 'once in a life time opportunity' - Jones

  • England appoint Eddie Jones as their first ever foreign coach to the national rugby side as he took a look around Twickenham and spoke to the media on Friday.

SOUNDBITE (English) Eddie Jones, England rugby coach

"You have got to remember that I have coached in England before. I have had two stints at Saracens. I understand from a club point of view how it works. I understand from a national team how it works. I did the same with the Brumbies and the Wallabies. And when you are on one side of the fence - you have a view - and when you get to the other side of the fence you have a view. And whatever side of the fence that you are on then that point of view is right. And I am on the other side of the fence now and I understand the relationship and for us there was a good relationship with the clubs but we want to make that relationship better. Because I think that everyone in England wants the England national team to do well. And for the English national team to do well, we want the Premiership clubs to play good rugby. And then it's about getting those best players coming out of those Premiership clubs."

"You (England) have won two of the last three under-20 World Cups. So there are talented players here. It's a matter now for me as the head coach of selecting the right players, moulding them into a team, believing in the style of play that we want to play, understanding how we want to change that style of play to accommodate certain situations. We might go to Scotland on 6th February. It might be pouring with rain. We might have to win 1-0, mate. We might have to kick a field goal to win. And if we have got to win that way then that is the way we have got to win."

"This opportunity is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I had to take it. I don't feel good about what I did to the Stormers. But at the same time I am excited about this opportunity."

SOUNDBITE (English) Eddie Jones, England rugby coach(On criticism of Chris Robshaw)

"I wasn't the coach of England then. I was a columnist. I was writing a column, mate. I was probably being a bit naughty. One of the first things that I have to do is that I am going to sit down with Chris and have chat with him. I have watched a couple of his games since the World Cup. And like all the other players they are all starting on zero. There is always an opportunity to change things and he is in exactly the same position."
