Australia will do "something special" to beat New Zealand

Monday, October 26 2015 by SNTV
  • Australia head coach Michael Cheika said on Sunday (25th October) that his players would have to "do something special" to beat New Zealand in the 2015 Rugby World Cup final.

Meanwhile Argentina head coach lamented his team's 29-15 semi-final defeat and said "We feel a huge pain, we were very emotional. This means more to the players than me. I was feeling for the players, but I feel very proud of them."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael Cheika, Australia head coach (Q: Was there an injury to Matt Giteau and Israel Folau looked to be struggling?)

"Yeah Matt came off with a little bit of a niggle in his groin but I think he came out alright talking to him after the game. I just felt like it was the right substitution to make at that time. Kurtley Beale has had an outstanding tournament really, he has been one of our best, so even for him not starting has been difficult. So there was an opportunity there to bring him on and i wouldn't hesitate, even though Matt is a very important player in this side obviously. Israel, he was always going to fatigue with his ankle towards the end, but he got 60 good minutes, so that will be a bonus for us bringing him into next week, getting that match fitness under his ankle."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael Cheika, Australia head coach (Q: Heyneke Meyer said the All Blacks are the best team ever to have played the game, do you agree with that?)

"They are obviously the world's number one aren't they and they're there for a reason. We have only beaten them once I think out of the last 10, so they will be feeling pretty good that they have got our measure and it is going to be up to us to do something special, do something extra to just be competitive."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael Cheika, Australia head coach (Q: You've come through a tough pool, sneaked past Scotland and now today, how much is left in the tank for next Saturday?)

"Probably about 80 minutes I reckon! No we might need a little bit more, you never know. Obviously yeah New Zealand have had a very different path to us here and obviously they will be feeling a little bit differently in their preparation et cetera, et cetera. Look mate, it is a World Cup final and the adrenaline will be pumping and I think anyone who is a little bit sore will forget about soreness when that whistle blows."
